Today we are featuring Lisa Bostrom who will be attending the Fall Market on September 7th & 8th at the Creekside Community Recreation Centre in the Olympic Village!
Lisa Bostrom, the creative mind behind Lisa Bostrom Jewellery creates pieces that truly represent the outdoors and whimsical environment of Canada. With pieces showcasing trees as well as different wildlife including birds and butterflies, it’s no wonder customers are falling in love. Lisa further explains, the initial inspiration for her pieces: “I am drawn to nature, and spend a lot of time in it – this is where the majority of my inspiration comes from. I studied Fine Arts, with my focus on painting and sculpture. Through my exploration of colour, texture, and various metals and wood, I found my love of copper. I sort of fell into jewellery making. Having no training in jewellery making, I find myself “playing” with new ideas and trying anything and everything that I can think of. Being self-taught in jewellery making has been a very exciting and rewarding experience thus far. I am very proud of each piece I create, putting my passion for creativity into every piece.” With this outlook on crafting different pieces, she creates a unique item for every customer to purchase – also helping Lisa develop the message and image behind her company “I guess you could say that my company and everything it stands for has grown (and continues to grow) organically with a love and openness to see what comes next.”
With experimentation, and a piece of copper Lisa became a part of the jewellery world without even knowing it: “I began by “playing” with a chunk of copper… not thinking about it becoming jewellery, rather, testing how far I could push the metal’s limits. I ended up with a cool little chunk of textured copper which a friend asked me to turn into a pendant for her! From that moment on, my jewellery making went from little gifts for friends and family, to sharing it with friends of friends, and their friends, and so on.” Through word of mouth, and recognizing the talent she had always had, Lisa found a fantastic platform to share and sell her product on: “I now have an Etsy shop online, and spend most of my time visiting various markets and events to share my work. I’m amazed when I stop and think of how a few years back, in a small town called Thunder Bay, I would create these small artworks not thinking many people would see them, and now pieces are everywhere from coast to coast in Canada, Japan, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and USA. It’s very humbling to see how much my art is appreciated all over the world!” How neat is it, to have the ability to share your craft all over the world with one form of social platforming?
The unique aspect and use of experimentation attracted Lisa to forming pieces of art in the form of jewellery “I was attracted to the diversity of the metal, and the idea that I could take something like an old copper fitting or pipe that had been discarded and dirty, and turn into something entirely different- giving it a new life.” Set guidelines don’t tie Lisa down either, each piece is designed with the outlook that life is coloured outside the lines “I am not a fan of following formulas or guidelines when it comes to art… I let it progress organically over time – absolutely!”
Lisa will be attending the Fall Market, and has shared these thoughts “This will be my first time vending in Vancouver. I am extremely excited and I look forward to seeing how my artwork is received! “ With her unique and one of a kind pieces, customer response is sure to be ecstatic and wide spread. With each piece subtly inspired by different forms of wildlife, the outdoorsy Vancouverites are sure to fall in love.
