How special is it to get your very first and very own doll as a little girl? We all crave for the moment when we receive a special friend to take care of and call our own. With the help of Bamboletta Dolls that moment becomes even more special, with a very unique doll of your own. A company based on Vancouver Island, Bamboletta produces all their dolls from natural materials. The owner, Christina Platt explains how special the production method actually is “We have a studio in Cobble Hill where there are some of us who work in the studio and then we have some moms that sew from home.” This has created a close knit family in the Bamboletta studios. And because they are able to gain so much joy from connecting with different people, it has made Bamboletta Dolls that much more excited to be a part of the Fall Market saying “Most of our dolls sell online, and have been for the past 9 years, but I really miss ‘real life’ selling and connecting with people. This is why I’m so excited to attend Portobello West!”

Circa 2003 Bamboletta Dolls was created by Christina, in her very own living room while she was living in Vancouver “Two things happened that came together that inspired me to create dolls; the first was reading about Waldorf dolls in a book about Waldorf education. I was entranced by two specific points. Foremost that the dolls be made with all natural materials such as wool, cotton, alpaca and mohair.  It is thought that a child’s energy is sensitive and natural materials just ‘flow’ with them (for lack of a better word!).” This was one of the many reasons why, Christina chose to use natural materials, she continues explaining “The other benefit of using natural materials is the ‘realness’ it lends the doll, the weight and feel of a doll stuffed with wool is quite something. Also, wool is naturally antibacterial and has this amazing way of warming up with cuddle and absorbing smells of home, making it a true comfort toy.”

The importance of giving a doll, the perfect traits to be a child’s best friend became a huge factor in manufacturing for Christina and what would become Bamboletta Dolls, further she muses “The other point was that their faces have a neutral facial expression so that the doll can portray happy, sad or somewhere in between. The reason this is so important is because children often deal with their life ‘issues’ by re-enacting them through play. So, having toys that encourage open ended play are great for the development in a child’s imagination.” With a new addition to her family, the science and crafting of dolls continued to spark Christina’s interest “The other event that happened was the birth of my niece. I was so inspired by the philosophy about the dolls that I wanted to get her one. My search was futile though, the few dolls I could find did not appeal to my aesthetic and I was really looking for something more modern and sweet. So, with the help of a German doll making book I pieced together my first doll, then another, then another and here we are now.”

The popularity of the dolls is apparent when taking a look at the Bamboletta Dolls website. Scrolling through picture after picture of dolls with the words SOLD OUT stamped across them, and for good reason. Each doll has such unique traits, whether it be through hair or the dresses and outfits they are wearing. The thought and care that is put into manufacturing each doll is apparent. While other dolls, have precious features that scream for them not to be played with but only to be displayed. Bamboletta Dolls on the other hand beg to be played with, hugged and loved by anyone who adopts them. Every doll looks soft, warm and cuddly and has incredible coloured hair to play with, style or braid. Bamboletta, manufactures various types of dolls which are also available for little girls and boys. Once you see the selection, and various types of dolls you’ll fall in love immediately, hoping desperately that you have a niece or nephew, daughter or son to purchase one for as a special gift.
