With the Holidays rapidly approaching and the cold weather upon us, nothing is more refreshing than a cup of warm tea and a drop of exquisite honey mixed in. With health awareness and organic goods readily available, we’re much more concerned and eager to learn about what we’re consuming. Mellifera Bees is a local honey manufacturer that signifies quality and delicious taste.
Melissa Cartwright owner of Mellifera Bees told Portobello West a little about her company and how it came to be “Mellifera Bees produces distinctive, hand-crafted honey infusions of exceptional quality. Honey is local to Vancouver and the lower mainland and the ingredients used to naturally flavour the honey are Organic.” Honey has great health properties, not only used as a moisturizer and hydrant in homemade face masks but also with medicinal properties, a table spoon can be taken to coat a sore throat. It also tastes yummy stirred into a cup of warm milk or drizzled on top of some rich Greek yogurt!
Melissa became interested in the world of honey by educating herself on every aspect of bee keeping. “I became interested in bees and beekeeping through reading books, the learning eventually lead me to getting my first hive. I have a massive sweet tooth, so naturally I became addicted to not just my honey but various varieties of honey from many parts of the world.”
Quality is vital to Melissa and her company Mellifera Bees, manufacturing product that’s good for you and tastes good too. It’s apparent not only in the healthy golden colour of each jar, but the way it’s displayed in the packaging of vintage looking mason jars and a clean cut label. Products are available for every palette with infused honey that includes cardamom (the aromatic seeds of a plant of the ginger family, used as a spice and also medicinally.) and vanilla or lemon. Melissa explains the importance to her in making handmade quality goods “I love having handmade goods around me, knowing the time and effort that went into the creation. I also appreciate when I get to meet the person that created the food or craft that i want to purchase knowing I can directly ask them about their process. In turn, creating Mellifera Bees honey allows me to interact with others as the crafts person, it is a great opportunity for me.”
Mellifera Bees will be attending next months Holiday Market on December 7th and 8th held by Portobello West. Mellissa expressed what has got her excited about the market “I love the hustle and bustle of market times, meeting new people and seeing thoughtful products made by other vendors”
