AJ

A piece of jewellery can tell a million stories, and with local jewellery designer Subject II Change, every piece holds different meaning. AJ Molinari, the creative director of Subject II Change explains this is deeper meaning: “When you purchase a piece its not just the brand Subject II Change, it’s also a piece of me. My designs and creations are a way for me to show others who I am. I built Subject II Change around two key ingredients, one part lust for life and one part rock & roll, because those are the two strongest aspects of my own personality”; truly making every piece purchased a meaningful addition to any customers’ collection.

Every piece you purchase from Subject II Change leaves you with the reassurance of quality and originality. AJ designs and produces every piece herself, with passion and inspiration from various venues such as music and culture: “Subject II Change is a jewellery and accessory company with unique handcrafted pieces that are inspired by popular culture of the past and present day.” AJ’s passion for crafting started at a young age, helping to relieve stress and entertain creativity, she muses “I started creating jewelry in high school – designing and making my own pieces as a stress reliever. I used to make different items and then give them out as gifts.” Sooner than she even thought, AJ’s journey into the jewellery industry like kismet began: “People eventually started asking me if they could buy them or if I could do custom pieces. As time passed, I continued to feel as though making jewellery was something that I needed to do regardless of what else was going on, but it wasn’t until I graduated University that I really realized that jewellery was my passion.” This drove AJ’s ambition, and sparked what soon became Subject II Change “I knew that if I was going to do this I was going to have to go full throttle, so in 2010, I took the big step and founded the company. The rest is history…”

When AJ was asked to elaborate what made her truly, become a part of the jewellery world she explained:

“When I was younger I really enjoyed jewellery. I loved going to festivals, concerts, art shows etc. and supporting the local artists by buying a unique piece so that I would have a fun story to tell. Over the years this developed into an obsession and I knew that I wanted to incorporate this concept into my own company. With this in mind, I try to create pieces that stand out from the crowd so that when someone sees you wearing it they’ll want to say, “Hey, where did you get that?” Sometimes it’s not just about owning a piece that makes you happy, but about the story of where or when you got it, that really makes it special to share.”

This statement strikes the utmost truth, in the sense that personality truly is a large part of what you chose to buy. Every piece created by AJ for Subject II Change tells a story, giving every customer a stepping stone and an imagination to start a story of their own.

AJ’s imaginative personality and sense of style is apparent in the pieces she designs. When asked about how this set style came to be, she describes the apparent evolution “My style progressed as I progressed. I am a self-taught artist, so a lot of the time creating pieces is trial and error. As my skills advanced so did my creations. I made what I thought would work best and what I would wear. The funny thing is, as a company, the Subject II Change style has just recently been established.” The name of the company resonates with the products created, and for good reason, AJ explains “I carry two different lines that cater to that underlying idea of ‘one part lust for life and one part rock n’ roll’, I am very much of the mindset that fashion is always changing and adapting, and we are changing along with it. So, I think that my collections will always strive to cater to those on going changes rather than to one particular style. Everything is subject to change, that’s where the name ‘Subject II Change’ came from.”

When asked what it’s like being a unique vendor in Vancouver, AJ further explains her journey to success. Being a challenging but rewarding experience both personally and throughout her career: “The art world is not an easy place to be. It’s very hard to get noticed and to be ‘different’. The support I have received here in Vancouver has been amazing. There is an appreciation for unique handcrafted pieces in this city; everyone wants the ‘one of a kind’ or the ‘limited edition’, and that’s what pushes me to keep creating unique items”, AJ continues by saying “it seems to me that when a piece is really unique, people are proud to show it off, so as you can imagine, I want everyone to know exactly who made it. It’s a win win.”

With an already positive attitude and charming personality , Subject II Change will only be spreading their wings wider and wider and soaring to an even higher peak. The fact that every piece has a story to tell makes a purchase the even more special and meaningful for every customer. As personal as a piece of jewellery is to someone, it has been AJ’s mission to make every piece that much more special for her clients. And through this process, making Subject II Change incredibly unique and beautiful through not only product but brand image as well.
